There is also citizenship through derivation available in certain cases. When a parent naturalizes, his or her minor children, the ones who still live with the parent, may be eligible to “derive citizenship automatically if they are permanent U.S. residents. Lastly, a person may obtain citizenship through the naturalization process. The naturalization process is when a person who is not born in the U.S. seeks to become a U.S. citizen. What is the Process for Becoming a Citizen through Naturalization?

In order to become a citizen through naturalization, certain eligibility requirements must be met. For instance, you must have lawful permanent residence status. This means, with few exceptions, you are required to have a green card in order to apply for U.S. citizenship. Beyond this central requirement, other relevant factors in U.S. citizenship eligibility include:

  • How long you have been in the U.S.

  • Moral character

  • English language proficiency

  • Knowledge of U.S. history and government

Once you have evaluated your eligibility for U.S. citizenship, it is time to see if you are able to address and resolve any factors that may make you ineligible. You may have spent too much time outside of the U.S. to apply for citizenship. You may have been convicted of a minor crime which put showing you are of solid moral character into question. These things may not be insurmountable barriers. It may simply mean that you will need to wait longer to be eligible for citizenship. There may be other steps you need to take to resolve the issue.

Once eligible for U.S. citizenship, you need to file the necessary paperwork with U.S. Citizenship and immigration Services (USCIS). You will need to attend a biometrics appointment in order to have your fingerprints taken. Your fingerprints will be run through FBI databases, among others, as part of your background check. Once your background check has cleared, you will receive an interview appointment with USCIS. The interview will include testing your ability to speak in English as well as your knowledge and understanding of U.S. history and civics.

After successful completion of the USCIS interview, you must attend a ceremony where you will be given an oath in which you swear loyalty to the U.S. This is the final step in the naturalization process. At the end, you are given a certificate of naturalization.
